1966 - 1981

Raised in Santa Cruz, California, Derek Sherinian began playing piano at the age of five. He came under the spell of the music of Elton John, particularly his 1973 sprawling double album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The album, along with the early influences of The Beatles and Bob Dylan-both mainstays of his parents’ music collection-launched him on a music journey which continues to this day.

1982 -1986

sc0006ca9004

While still a junior in high school his musical talent was such that Sherinian was offered a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

sc00072eaa

“Berklee was a musical paradise. (Hear Derek jam & study with Alex Alessandroni in 1982- File A). It was great to be in an environment where there were musicians my age from around the world studying their craft with the intent of having a career in music. I was jamming with people like guitarist Al Pitrelli, who would go on to play with me in Alice Cooper, and drummer William Calhoun, who later played in Living Colour. After my classes I’d spend hours in the practice room honing my chops, and at night we’d jam in the ensemble rooms. It was great.”

1981-1988

Although at Berklee Sherinian developed an appreciation for a variety of musical instruments and genres, he’s an avid guitar fan through and through.

“Most of all I admire the heaviness of guitarists like Van Halen, Malmsteen and Rhoads, as well as fusion cats like Holdsworth, Di Meola and Jeff Beck. In my keyboard playing and compositions, I aspire to fuse the heaviness of metal with the technique of fusion. It’s a style I call ‘metal fusion.’”

After spending three semesters at the school, Sherinian garnered his first professional gig with Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsys’ drummer Buddy Miles. “I was 21 at the time,” Sherinian recalls. “We toured throughout the U.S., especially the Chitlin’ Circuit in the south. We played mostly Hendrix songs and R&B classics. Buddy’s nickname for me was Mortimer—I don’t know why. Miles would say to me, ‘Mortimer, you always have to listen for the train in the music to find the groove. You aIways have to feel the train.’ I carry that with me, to this day.”

1989

Before long, Sherinian got a call from his former Berklee roommate, guitarist Al Pitrelli, who was Alice Cooper’s musical director. Alice was hiring a brand-new band to tour in support of the shock rocker’s platinum-selling Trash album, and a slot was open for a keyboardist. Sherinian got the gig & toured with Alice Cooper for roughly three years, playing more than 250 shows from 1989’s Trash tour to the 1995 South American “Monsters of Rock” shows. He also performed with Alice at the special New Year shows in both 1996 and 1997.

Reflecting on Sherinian, Cooper said: “Derek Sherinian will be at least one chapter in my book when I write my autobiography. He is arrogance personified. He is the Caligula of the keyboards. He is the pompous king of pop. He was born with the rock star charisma. Reeking of self-esteem, he walked into our first rehearsal for the ‘Trash’ tour and flawlessly auditioned by playing every classic Bob Ezrin keyboard part to the note. Ten years later and thousands of exchanged poker chips later, the two of us have probably broken even. He is the only one to survive the wrath of the Alice Cooper Tour Poker Marathon. Derek is always on time, in tune, and ready to play…music too.”

1991 - 1996

In 1991, following Alice’s Hey Stoopid tour, Sherinian became the offstage keyboardist for KISS, at the suggestion of Eric Singer, who had been band mates with Sherinian in the Cooper band, and had also recently been hired as the band’s drummer. “Being a Kiss fan since childhood, I was excited to get that gig. During my audition, Paul Stanley asked me to play the opening riff to ‘Love Gun’ on keyboards, and I nailed it. Luckily, I’ve heard that song since I was a teenager, so I knew it inside and out.”

In 1994, Sherinian joined progressive metal band Dream Theater for their promotional tour for “Awake” and it became fulltime in 1995. He was a key member for four years, and his expansive playing was integral to his three releases with the group—A Change of Seasons (1995), Falling Into Infinity (1997) and Once in a LIVEtime (1998). Dream Theater ultimately became the world’s most beloved progressive hard rock band since Rush.

Next was the formation of Platypus in 1997, an American progressive rock / jazz-fusion supergroup, conceived by Sherinian and Dream Theater bassist John Myung, as a creative outlet where ideas could be developed. Joined by guitarist Ty Tabor of King’s X (who also sang lead vocals) and drummer Rod Morgenstein of Dixie Dregs, they released two albums between 1997 and 2000: When Pus Comes To Shove & Ice Cycles.

In 1999, Sherinian recorded Planet X, his first solo album, which was released on July 13, 1999 through Magna Carta Records.

Sherinian later turned Planet X into a concept band. An extreme fusion outfit that pushed serious rhythmic and melodic ground featuring drummer Virgil Donati and guitar virtuoso Tony MacAlpine. The trio would go on to record Universe (2000), Live from Oz (live Album 2002), Moonbabies (2002) & Quantum (2007).

In 2001, Sherinian got a phone call from Billy Idol’s guitarist, Steve Stevens, who asked Sherinian to audition for Idol’s band, Sherinian snagged the gig and ended up touring with Idol for twelve years – becoming one of the first keyboardists to use vertical stands, influencing a new generation of keyboardists.

2001-2002

During the same year, Sherinian teamed with drummer Simon Phillips and guitarists Zacc Wylde and Steve Lukather (Toto) to record his second solo album “Inertia”. Lukather would later recount “probably my best recorded work in my whole career.” * File RR

In 2002, Sherinian and Yngwie Malmsteen cross-collaborated on each other’s latest solo albums (Attack!! and Black Utopia). Attack!! was Malmsteen’s fourteenth studio album which was released in October 2002. Black Utopia was Sherinian’s third and also featured bassist Billy Sheehan and jazz fusion guitarist Al Di Meola.

On March 6, 2004, Sherinian reunited with Dream Theater for a solo concert, which was recorded and released as “When Dream and Day Reunite.” The band’s performance of “Metropolis Pt. 1” featured an extended improvisation between Sherinian, keyboardist Jordan Rudess, and guitarist John Petrucci.

2003-2004

Sherinian extended further into the fusion realm by collaborating with guitarist Allan Holdsworth and violinist Jerry Goodman (formerly of the Mahavishnu Orchestra) on his 4th solo album, Mythology. In addition to another appearance by Phillips, other musicians appearing on this recording were Zakk Wylde, John Sykes, Steve Stevens, and Tony Franklin. Sherinian often tailors songs for specific guitarists, such as Holdsworth and Wylde for “Day of the Dead” (off Mythology), taking certain aspects and making them “collide in an eloquent way.”

April 2004, Sherinian was invited by Ex-Whitesnake guitarist John Sykes to play three shows in Japan with Marco Mendoza on bass and Tommy Aldridge on drums. The live album John Sykes Bad Boy Live was from this tour.

2005

J

Sherinian then went on to record “Devil’s Playground”, Billy Idol’s sixth studio album which wasreleased on March 22nd, 2005. It was Idol’s first studio album in over a decade. Idol and theband supported the album with a world tour of rock festival appearances in 2005 and 2006,including several performances on the Vans Warped Tour.

2006

Derek’s fifth solo album, Blood of the Snake (2006), features contributions from Idol, as well asGuns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, John Petrucci of Dream Theater, and Brian Tichy. Phillips, Franklinand Lukather made return appearances. There’s a hot rendition of Mungo Jerry’s 1970 NumberOne smash hit “In the Summertime” that features Billy Idol and Slash. A video for the coverversion was released along with the album.

‘In The Summertime’ was my favorite song when I was 3,” acknowledges Sherinian.”Billystarted singing it one day at soundcheck, and we started jamming on it. We agreed it would bea great song to cover one day. Slash was the perfect guitarist for this track. I think that it’s agreat, timeless song, and the combination of Billy andSlash is very cool.”

Sherinian also worked with duduk master Djivan Gasparyan on the song “Prelude To Battle”,written for his great grandmother Elizabeth Soutanyan who survived the Armenian genocide.

2006

Even after having played with several of his guitaridols, the biggest thrill of Sherinian’s careerhappened in September 2006, when he played with Eddie Van Halen. “I performed a privateparty at his house,” the keyboardist explains. “The day before the gig after soundcheck Eddiegave me a private tour ofhis 5150 studio. On the wall hung a few of his most famous guitars I’dseen pictured in magazines, and in his vault were master tapes of unreleased material. He toldme that his concept of music theory is, ‘There are only twelve notes—do what you want withthem.’

During the gig we played classic songs like ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,’ ‘Jump,’ ‘You Really GotMe,’ and we had this long jam. I was in awe the entire time! Eddie’s guitar sounded so massivecoming through the cabinets; his playing is sooriginal that over the years it inspired me to pushthe envelope on my instrument.

2007

CC

Sherinian’s collaborations with top musicians were featured in a 2007 article in Guitar Worldmagazine, where guitarist ZakkWylde offered “People want to play with him because he’s thatgood. He can play everything from the easiest licks on a piano to the most complex Beethoven sonatas with ease.”

Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci added “… Derek-considering the fact that he’s heavily into guitarists and rock music, his history, and the range of all the great guitarists he’s worked with—plays with a fire unheard of from most keyboardists.” Sherinian enlists a variety of guitarists because he doesn’t think there is one guitarist who can cover all the styles featured on the albums.

2008 saw the release of Sherinian’s 2nd collaboration with Yngwie Malmsteen on his 16th album “Perpetual Flame” as well as Idol’s “The Very Best of Bily Idol: Idolize Yourself” featuring three new songs, including “Speed” that had been previously only available on the Speed movie soundtrack as well as “Fractured”, an exclusive track available only on the digital version.

The following year, Sherinian released his sixth solo album, Molecular Heinosity, again featuringZakk Wylde, Tony Franklin and Brian Tichy. In July, Sherinian performed a one-off acoustic gigwith Alice in Chains to launchtheir Black Gives Way to Blue album.

2009

It was also in 2009 that, what had started as Joe Bonamassa & Glenn Hughes’ side project (after an impromptu performance together) turned into Black Country Communion when they recruited Jason Bonham and Sherinian to finalize the band’s line up. The English American supergroup, whose name was derived from the term Black Country (area of West Midlands where Hughes and Bonham grew up), began recording their first self titled album (with its sound intentionally reminiscent of popular classic rock groups of the 1970’s) and released their first album in 2010. By the end of the year, Sherinian had completed another Europe/USA/Canada tour with Billy Idol and Black Country Communion had won the Planet Rock awards for Band of th e Year and Best New Band. Talk of a second album had already begun to circulate as early as October 2010, just a month after the release of Black Country Communion.

In 2011, PSMS (Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine, Sherinian) was formed by drummer Mike Portnoy, whom Sherinian played with in Dream Theater. This lineup was initially assembled to play a one-off drum event at NAMM, in California. “The response to that gig was overwhelming,” said Sherinian. “We went on to do a five-week tour in the U.S.,Europe and Japan. I’m blessed to be living a life that most musicians can only dream about.”

2011

N

By mid 2011, BCC released its 2nd album “Black Country Communion 2” and went on a short tour of Europe between June and July supported by the Michael Schenker Group. The group also performed in the US for the first time on the Black Country Communion 2 cycle, playing a total of seven shows in six states between June 10 and 19, 2011. The band’s first live videoalbum, Live Over Europe, recorded during the summer tour of Europe, was released in October 2011 and screened in a select number of Vue Cinemas across the UK and Ireland the nextmonth. At the end of the year, BCC won the Classic Rock award for Breakthrough Act of the Year.

P

2011

In September 2011, Sherinian released his seventh solo album titled Oceana, again an assemblage of some of the most talented players to ever strap on a guitar joined Sherinian in the studio. Steve Lukather once again collaborated with the keyboardist for the tracks “Mulholland,” “Euphoria,” and “Seven Sins.” Former Planet X guitarist and fusion legend Tony MacAlpine laid down performances for “Five Elements,” and “Mercury 7.” The one and only Steve Stevens is featured on “Ghost Runner,” and the title track “Oceana.” Black Country Communion band mate Joe Bonamassa makes an appearance as well on “I Heard That,” while Doug Aldrich performs on “El Camino Diablo.” Simon Phillips performs all drums on Oceana, while Jimmy Johnson laid down the bass on all tracks outside of “Ghost Ru nner” and the title track which features Tony Franklin.

December 12, 2015, Sherinian co-organized and participated in the Tony MacAlpine Benefit Concert at the Wiltern Theater in L.A. backing up Zakk Wylde along with Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan.

2017

January 5, 2017, Sherinian entered the studio with a reunited Black Country Communion to record their fourth studio album. BCCIV was released on September 22, 2017, and was promoted at two UK shows in January 2018. BCCIV was the band’s first release to reach the top ten of the UK Albums Chart.

In April, Sherinian joined guitarists Steve Vai, and Yngwie Malmsteen to join the Generation Axe / A Night Of Guitars Tour also featuring Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt, and Tosin Abasi on their Asia 2017 Tour for 11 Live performances.

2017-2019

2017 also saw the formation of Sons Of Apollo, a prog metal supergroup which Sherinian and Portnoy formed with virtuoso bassist Billy Sheehan (The Winery Dogs, ex-Dave Lee Roth), modern guitar icon Bumblefoot and former Yngwie Malmsteen singer Jeff Scott Soto “a group of musicians whose collective pedigree outstrips that of any other supergroup you care to mention.” Dave Everley (Loudersound – 10/20/2017). SOA released their first album “Psychotic Symphony” in October. The album was recorded at Ocean Studios in Burbank, California where the band also shot the video for their 1st release “Coming Home”. In October 2018, Sherinian was voted #9 Greatest Keyboardist Ever in Prog Magazine Issue 91.

Psychotic Symphony was nominated at the Progressive Music Awards 2018 for Best International Band.

“Fuck the term ‘supergroup’, that’s not what this is about. Sons of Apollo are simply a group that are super.” – Classic Rock

“Psychotic Symphony is fierce, loud, bewildering, brilliantly performed and monstrously entertaining.” – Prog Magazine

“God-like in conception, stellar in ambition and perfection in delivery.” – Metal Talk

Sherinian, Portnoy and Bumblefoot began writing SOA’s second album at the start of 2019 in Portnoy’s home studio.

2019

Sherinian also recorded David Coverdale’s “The Rock Album”: a “revisited, remixed and remastered” collection of Whitesnake’s best rock songs.

“Thank god, I found Derek Sherinian, who – and I know he won’t mind me saying this – Derek’s like the illegitimate son of Jon Lord. And he respects the work he’s doing – which is huge – and the material’s very strong, so he just played his ass off for us, and you can hear it.” -David Coverdale.

2019 - 2020

On August 30,2019, SOA released ‘Live With The Plovdiv Psychotic Symphony”, the band’s remarkable one-off performance at the Ancient Roman Theatre in Plovdiv, Bulgaria alongside a full orchestra & choir, playing tracks from their debut album ‘Psychotic Symphony’ as well as a selection of tracks by legendary bands.

Sons of Apollo kicked off the new decade, 2020, with the release of their 2nd album, appropriately titled “MMXX”. Produced by Sherinian and Portnoy, MMXX was released on January 17, 2020 and began an early tour of North America. Support on the trek, which kicked off on January 24 in Pomona, California, was provided by guitarist Tony MacAlpine, who previously played alongside Sherinian in PLANET X and with Portnoy, Sherinian and Sheehan in PSMS. Due to Covid-19, the band returned to the US from Europe on March 3 and postponed the tour till 2021.

2021

Sherinian became the newest addition to the list of guest musicians on Michael Schenker’s new album Immortal, released in January 2021. “Derek and myself trading solos, it sounds unexpected and beyond my expectation. Absolutely fantastic!” – Michael Schenker

2021

Most recently, Sherinian released his latest solo album, “The Phoenix” (link to purchase), his first since 2011’s Oceana

The acclaimed keyboardist, who has always distinguished himself by his versatility and aggressive “guitaristic” approach to his keyboard style, teamed up with drummer extraordinaire Simon Philipps again, who not only plays drums but also co-produced and co-wrote the album.

“I truly feel that this is my best solo record to date. Simon and I put a lot energy into the writing, and I am grateful to all of the great players that contributed to this recording.”

There are a number of top-line guests featured on The Phoenix, as has been the case in the past for Sherinian, on both guitar and bass. Some have become regular contributors to his solo sessions. People such as bassists Tony Franklin, Jimmy Johnson and Billy Sheehan. Plus guitarists Joe Bonamassa and Zakk Wylde. In addition, others were welcomed into the fold for the first time: master guitarist Steve Vai, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (Guns’n Roses, Sons of Apollo) and Kiko Loureiro (Megadeath). The album also features master thereminist Armen Ra on selected songs.
